S’mores; A New Twist on an Old Favorite

It wouldn’t be summer without a campfire and S’mores! Who doesn’t love the ooey, gooey, marshmellow sticky on your hand? I know I sure do! Have you ever thought about how S’mores came about? Or ways that you could change the tried-and-true to become something even better?

Did you know today August 10, is National S’mores Day? How did we get here? Who would have thought we would be celebrating marshmallows, chocolate, and graham crackers. It really is a campfire staple, a right of passage to being a kid.

According to our friends over at Wikipedia, S’mores first came around in the early 1920’s, it was called a Graham Cracker Sandwich. The boy scouts and girls scouts were eating this yummy treat at camps. Over the years the name changed to Some More with the first known recipe published in Tramping and Trailing with Girls Scouts all the way back in 1927. In 1938, a recipe published called them s’mores and by 1957 Betty Crocker first published their recipe for S’mores.

S’more are pretty simple to make. You’ll need a campfire, a roasting stick, marshmallows, chocolate bar, and graham crackers. Once you have your campfire set up, take your marshmallow, put it on your roasting stick and into the fire. Some people like their marshmallows cooked really well while others like them golden brown. Anyway you like them will work, there is no wrong way. When your marshmallow is done to your liking, place it between two graham crackers along with chocolate. Eat, enjoy and repeat!

If you don’t have access to a campfire you can always get a S’more Maker. It makes it easy and give you a way to eat the yummy treat from the comfort of your kitchen table. Or this fun S’more Maker to make them right in your microwave. It really can’t get any easier than that! I personally like the first one better because I can roast the marshmallows, which is half the fun of a S’more.

A cookie S’more

Lately, we have been experiencing with different variations. One of my sons loves to have his roasted marshmallows between two cookies along with the chocolate pieces. Or even better, roasted marshmallows between two cookies with a melted caramel plus chocolate. Can you say crazy? My other son loves to use a peanut butter cup in place of the chocolate. You can get as creative as you like. If you like tasty treats by the fire, try melting a caramel and putting it between two Ritz crackers. Another favorite, and just as delicious.

Anyway you like them, you should be enjoying them. There is truly nothing better than sitting by the campfire roasting marshmallows, making s’mores.
